The CCFEE was officially born in 2006 with an agreement between the National Antarctic Museum (MNA) and the University of Tuscia (Department of Ecological and Biological Science, DEB) with the aim to preserve and valorise fungal cultures isolated from Antarctic environmental samples. The collection has been implemented also with fungi isolated worldwide from diverse extreme environments and in the 2020 two collections have been splitted and definedrenamed as follows: the Culture Collection of Fungi from Extreme Environments (CCFEE, Department of Ecological and Biological Sciences, University of Tuscia, Viterbo) including extreme fungi worldwide and part of the JRU-MIRRI IT, and the National Antarctic Museum Culture Collection of Fungi from Extreme Environments (MNA-CCFEE), which include exclusively fungi from Antarctica which is property of the Italian Antarctic National Museum, not included in MIRRI IT at the moment. At MNA-CCFEE andThe CCFEE, to date, ca 1,238 accessions, including including algae, meristematic fungi (818 strains), yeasts (231 strains), and filamentous fungi (189 strains) and associated metadata are available. Beside isolation, morphological and molecular characterization, valorization and maintenance of microbial resources, several national and international projects, including those approved from the Joint Genome Institute (US Department of Energy), have been funded to characterize the genomic and metabolomic profiles of selected strains. Both collectionsThe CCFEE are is involved in managing microbial culture exchanges and depositions with other Culture Collections worldwide and supporting researchers providing strains in the frame of established collaborations and agreements. Finally, MNA-CCFEE and CCFFE organize formative activities in the field of microbiology for the training of the internal personnel.
